Volvo's smallest pure electric vehicle is also the company's smallest-ever SUV, a city-sized vehicle that makes the most of interior and cargo space, while remaining maneuverable enough to easily parallel park in front of your favorite coffee shop. But unlike most small vehicles made for city dwellers, the EX30 boasts some seriously impressive performance capabilities. Buyers get an all-wheel drive setup that produces a staggering 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Those are proper sports car numbers, but with the EX30, you don't have to sacrifice any practicality to have them. With its 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds, the EX30 is the fastest-accelerating Volvo of all time. For most small EVs, you have to choose between performance and range, but the EX30 is efficient enough to be able to offer both impressive performance and 253 miles of range.

Like the rest of the Volvo lineup, the interior of the EX30 is a showcase of serene Scandinavian design. You can choose from five different "moods" for the ambient lighting, and there is an available Harman Kardon Premium Sound system with a 1040W output and front soundbar. There are multiple cargo areas, including a front load compartment and in-floor compartments, adding to the practicality of the small SUV. And in addition to its small size, there is available Park Pilot Assist, which allows the EX30 to park itself, a valuable tool for city living.

Volvo EX40

Volvo EX40

Key Features

  • Starting at $41,945 MSRP
  • Standard Drivetrain - all-electric single-motor RWD (248 horsepower / 310 lb-ft of torque) or all-electric dual-motor AWD (402 horsepower / 494 lb-ft of torque
  • Maximum Towing Capacity - 2,000 pounds
  • Seating Capacity - 5 Passengers
  • Cargo Capacity - 57.5 cubic feet
  • Interior Headroom (Front/Rear) 37.6 / 38.3 inches
  • Interior Legroom (Front/Rear) - 40.9 / 36.1 inches

If the EX40 looks familiar, that's because it's heavily based on the XC40, including the almost identical styling. The big difference between the two is the drivetrain, with the EX40 being the all-electric version of the two. It is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque or 402 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque. In RWD form, the output is very similar to what you get in the SC40, but upgrading to the more powerful AWD drivetrain turns the EX40 into a genuine performance machine, with a 0-60 time of just 4.6 seconds.

Everything you love about the interior of the XC40 is here in the EX40, and the trim levels for both are the same as well. That means highly desirable options like the 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system can be found on the EX40 too. There is a variety of available interior colors and materials, including sustainably sourced upholstery. And there's one more feature that sets the EX40 apart from its gas-powered counterpart, and that is the under-hood storage compartment, made possible by the fact that the electric drivetrain doesn't need to use that space.

Volvo C40

Volvo C40

Key Features

  • Starting at $54,695 MSRP
  • Fully electric drivetrain, rear-wheel drive with an output of 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, or all-wheel drive with an output of 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque
  • Range - 297 miles
  • Maximium Towing Capacity - 2,000 pounds
  • Seating Capacity - Up to 5 Passengers
  • Cargo Capacity - 49 cubic feet
  • Interior Headroom (Front/Rear) - 39.4 / 36.7 inches
  • Interior Legroom (Front/Rear) - 40.9 / 36.1 inches

The C40 is an exceptionally well-executed mix of style, performance, and practicality. Its sloping roof sets it apart from the mechanically similar XC40 Recharge, and its available 402 horsepower sets it well apart from the rest of the compact crossover segment. The all-electric drivetrain comes with standard rear-wheel drive and a range of up to 297 miles. The standard drivetrain comes with 248 horsepower, but if you want more power, there is a dual-motor setup available, which produces the aforementioned 402 horsepower. This setup also give you all-wheel drive. The range isn't quite as long, but the 257 miles of range that comes with the dual-motor setup isn't a big enough difference that buyers who want more power or AWD should be deterred. The C40's compact size makes it easy to live with, even in urban areas, but smart use of interior space means that you still have tons of cargo space, and a 2,000-pound towing capacity for when you have cargo that rolls. That isn't something you would usually associate with a vehicle that can hit 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, but the Volvo C40 redefines what versatility means.

The quiet of the electric drivetrain in the C40 really lets you enjoy the sound of the available 600W Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, complete with 13 hi-fi speakers, which is tuned specifically for use in the C40 using Dirac® Unison Tuning. The interior feels open and bright too, thanks to the standard panoramic sunroof, and the legendary Volvo safety design and tech will keep you feeling safe as well.

If you're looking for a technological marvel, a powerhouse of the most advanced automotive technology on the road, and you also want it to have seating for 7, the vehicle for you is the Volvo EX90. This all-electric SUV comes with standard all-wheel drive and a range of up to 310 miles. It will hit 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, thanks to its available 510 horsepower, an incredible feat for a 7-seat SUV. But as impressive as the performance of the EX90 is, there is so much more to this vehicle than that. The use of lidar and interior occupant sensing make this the highest level of safety for any Volvo ever, and with Volvo, that's saying a lot. Thanks to a highly advanced array of cameras and sensors, the EX90 is able to get the best possible picture of what is going on around it, and take the necessary precautions automatically, thanks to the advanced Pilot Assist enhanced driver assistance.

The interior seats 7, and by that we mean 7 actual adults, which isn't always the case with 7-seaters. The standard panoramic sunroof provides natural light for all onboard, and the clean Scandinavian design makes for a serene place to enjoy a road trip. There is an available Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system, tailored specifically for the EX90 and featuring 25 speakers and Dolby Atmos, all of which adds up to an almost otherworldly listening experience.
