2025 Volvo Towing Capacity Guide

Volvo Towing Guide - Motorcars Volvo

Volvo makes vehicles that are extremely safe, comfortable, and offer great cargo space. As such, they're popular road trip vehicles. And while not everyone tows a trailer on a road trip, towing capacity is an important piece of information for a popular road trip vehicle. It might even be the deciding factor when choosing between two different Volvo models, and that's why we put together this guide, so you can see at a glance how much you can tow.

Volvo S60/V60 Cross Country Towing Capacity

Volvo S60

You're going to have a hard time finding a vehicle that gives you the kind of versatility that is offered by the Volvo S60. The S60 is available as a mild hybrid or a plug-in hybrid that turns both performance and efficiency way up. Or for a more utilitarian version, there is the V60 Cross Country, which is one of the few wagons still available in the US, and gives you lots more cargo space and the ability to handle light offroading. Choosing between them is made easier by the fact that all of them offer the same towing capacity. So you never have to choose between towing and another desirable feature.

Volvo V90 Cross Country

Sleek and sophisticated, the V90 Cross Country is a refined solution for those who want a lot of cargo space, but don't want an SUV. Volvo wagons have always been highly practical vehicles, and with 69 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity, the V90 Cross Country is very much carrying on that tradition. All-wheel drive comes standard, along with the mild hybrid system that gives the V90 Cross Country a fuel economy advantage over its competitors. The interior offers a luxury experience that's big on tech, and includes a choice of three different stereo systems that take you well into audiophile territory.

Volvo EX30 Towing Capacity

Volvo EX30

Most subcompact vehicles aren't rated for towing. Some of this is because many don't offer all-wheel drive, but a lot also don't come with very much power, which is fine if you only need to move a small vehicle around, but becomes a huge problem when you need to tow. The EX30 is no ordinary subcompact though. All-wheel drive is standard, and the all-electric Twin Motor drivetrain is so powerful that the EX30 has the quickest 0-60 time in the entire history of Volvo road cars. That's why the EX30 easily out-tows a huge cross section of the automotive market.

Volvo XC60 Towing Capacity

Volvo XC60

The XC60 is mechanically very similar to the S60, but there are some important differences. The first is that, while the S60 is available with front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive is standard on the XC60. The B5 and T8 drivetrains make the same power in the XC60 that they make in the S60, but the XC60 still has a higher towing capacity. Like the S60, the XC60 is available as either a mild hybrid or a plug-in hybrid, with the plug-in hybrid once again coming with some serious power. The XC60 does come with a lot more cargo space though, a maximum of 63.3 cubic feet, quite a lot for the midsize segment.

Volvo EX40 Towing Capacity

Volvo EX40

There are a few small differences, but overall, the EX40 has the same body as the XC40. That's certainly a good thing, but you might be wondering why Volvo needs two of these models. The answer is that the EX40 is an electric vehicle, with two available drivetrain configurations. The Single Motor drivetrain is standard, and sends power to the rear wheels. Upgrade to the Twin Motor and you get all-wheel drive, along with noticeably more power. The interior is the same one you know and love from the XC40, except you get to enjoy it more, since you don't ever have to stop and get out at a gas station.

Volvo C40 Recharge Towing Capacity

Volvo C40 Recharge

Compact luxury SUVs have become an immensely popular segment in recent years, giving you a luxury experience in a vehicle that's small enough to make negotiating city streets easy. And since it doesn't hurt to look good while you do it, Volvo offers the C40 Recharge. Mechanically, the C40 Recharge is identical to the EX40, but it wears a different body that includes a fashionable coupe-like sloping roof. This design is also more aerodynamic, so the 297-mile range rating for the C40 Recharge is one more than you get with the EX40, and the Twin Motor drivetrain will get you to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, compared to 4.7 seconds in the EX40. But the towing capacity remains the same.

Volvo XC90

When you need a higher towing capacity and/or more seats, you can't go wrong with the XC90. You'd have a hard time finding a vehicle that has been praised by the automotive press more than the XC90 as well, and it's not hard to see why. The XC90 comes with standard all-wheel drive and a choice of three different drivetrains. Two of these are mild hybrids, while the third is the T8 plug-in hybrid option offered for a number of other models. And even though the XC90 is the biggest vehicle in the Volvo lineup, complete with seating for 7, T8-equipped models will still go from 0 to 60 in just 5 seconds.

Volvo EX90 Towing Capacity

Volvo EX90

The EX90 is made to fill the same role as the XC90, but is built on a different platform with different drivetrains and different styling. Essentially, the EX90 is the flagship for Volvo's electric models, while the XC90 is the flagship for gasoline-powered models. The EX90 comes with a choice of two impressively powerful electric drivetrains, standard all-wheel drive, and the most advanced safety technology on the market. It's easy to be distracted by the 310-mile maximum range, or the shockingly quick 4.7-second 0-60 time, but the EX90 is a technological powerhouse in more than just a couple of areas. It's even a great tow vehicle.
