XC90 VS Acura MDX - Motorcars Volvo

Volvo and Acura have long been favorite brands for those who want a luxury vehicle without all of the vulgar ostentation offered up by many of the other luxury brands. The Volvo XC90 and Acura MDX were the first SUVs to be offered by their respective brands, and years of evolution and refinement have shaped them into segment leaders. Choosing between these two safe and reliable three-row luxury SUVs might seem like a toss-up, but there are a few differences that can help you to determine which one is better for you, which is why we put together this guide.

Both of these SUVs offer three rows of seats, accommodating up to seven people, including the driver. The XC90 is available with a 6-seat configuration, replacing the 2nd-row bench with a pair of captains’ chairs, but the MDX is only available with 7 seats. The XC90 is a bit shorter than the MDX, but has a longer wheelbase, so passenger space is similar enough to not be a significant factor in choosing between the two vehicles. The slight differences in size add up to the MDX having more cargo space, and the XC90 being a bit easier to fit in the garage.

The starting prices of these two vehicles are similar. The XC90 starts off a bit higher because more comes as standard, with all-wheel drive alone accounting for a good deal of the price difference. While both vehicles come well-equipped and offer an impressive list of optional equipment, trim levels are treated a bit differently. Drivetrain options aren’t connected to trims with the XC90; all of them come with standard AWD, and any of the three drivetrains can be had in conjunction with any of the trims. Acura is a little different, with the two lowest-priced trims coming with front-wheel drive as standard and offering all-wheel drive as an option. The more powerful turbocharged engine is also only available with the MDX Type S, but more on that in a bit. The MDX is offered in three different trim levels, compared to the three for the XC90, so finding an MDX that’s equipped and priced similarly to the XC90 isn’t difficult.

Volvo XC90 VS Acura MDX - Unique Varieties

Volvo XC90
Acura MDX

Here is where we see the biggest difference between the XC90 and MDX. Each of these vehicles has an alternative version for which there is no comparable version for the other. For the XC90, that is the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, which features a 455-horsepower PHEV drivetrain capable of 33 miles of all-electric driving on a full charge, and a combined 58 MPGe rating. For the MDX, it is the MDX Type S, a high-performance version with a 355-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine. While the Volvo does have more power, the MDX Type S does throw in a lot of other performance features, like adaptive air suspension and big 4-piston Brembo® brakes. The Type S is also the top trim of the MDX, so it comes with the most standard equipment of any MDX trim. The XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, meanwhile, is available in the same three trim levels as the conventional version. In all, it’s clear that both vehicles make excellent choices, and it really comes down to what sorts of features you want.
