2026 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid vs. BMW X5 PHEV Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos

2026 XC90 Plug-In Hybrid VS X5 PHEV - Motorcars Volvo

The Volvo XC90 has been heralded as the last word in family-friendly transportation, and the plug-in hybrid variant gives it a further edge over the competition. That said, there are other luxury PHEV SUVs out there, and the BMW X5 xDrive50e in particular is likely to be one that anyone shopping in this segment would notice, thanks to its nearly identical price and size to the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. But how does the X5 really compare to the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid? It falls well short of the usefulness and everyday livability of the XC90 in a number of key ways. Read on to see how.

It’s very important to note from the start that these two vehicles are almost exactly the same price, with the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid starting at $77,595* and the X5 PHEV starting at $77,450. That’s important because that nearly identical sum gets you different things from each automaker. Both come with a PHEV drivetrain, but they’re not identical. The X5 uses a six-cylinder gasoline engine and a single electric motor, while the XC90 comes with a four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors. Performance is nonetheless very similar; the X5 has a bit more horsepower, but the difference in 0-60 times is less than half a second.

Generally speaking, people don’t buy midsize SUVs for the performance anyway, so a more important topic of discussion is size. Overall length is basically identical, with a difference of less than one inch. But that smaller gasoline engine in the XC90 allows for a much shorter hood, so more of that overall length is made up of interior space for the Volvo. This brings us to the first major advantage of the XC90: it has a third row of seats. The X5 comes with five seats, and while there are two-row SUVs that offer a third row as an option, the X5 isn’t one of them. If you need to transport more than five people, as people with families often do, there is no substitute for that third row. It pretty much goes without saying that the XC90 also has more cargo space, but the extent is still fairly remarkable. The maximum cargo capacity of the X5 is 71.2 cubic feet, while the XC90 comes in at 85.7 cubic feet. The difference between those two is roughly the same as the entire trunk space of an average midsize sedan. And yet, the XC90 is just as easy to maneuver and park as the X5.

Volvo has always put an emphasis on quality materials and sleek Scandinavian design. And you can see this commitment to quality in the details of the XC90. While BMW offers glass controls as an extra-cost option, the glass gear selector in the XC90 isn’t just standard; it’s also genuine crystal, manufactured by the Swedish glass house Orrefors®. Where you find a row of LED lights that serve no practical function on the dash of the X5, the XC90 has Ash wood trim pieces. Then there’s the stereo system. The XC90 and X5 are both available with a premium Harman Kardon® stereo system. This delivers excellent sound, but for really passionate music lovers, it is only the Volvo that lets you upgrade to a Bowers & Wilkins system with triple the wattage of the BMW system, as well as more speakers. Once again, the advantages of the XC90 are everywhere in the details.

Just the third row of seats and extra cargo space in the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid make it a far superior family vehicle, but those are still far from the only reasons to choose it over the X5. The XC90 also comes with superior style, sophistication, and an attention to detail that has always characterized Volvo vehicles. But to really appreciate these things, the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid needs to be experienced in person. Let Motorcars Volvo Cars help you experience the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid and find the one that’s right for you.
